Color in the Classroom (call it “out of the box”)

March 30, 2009 by

I found a blog about colors in the classroom.  To say the least it was interesting.  .  A classroom should in my opinion, offer security, warmth, and be a place of study, thus being well kept and organized, offering students maximum potential for learning.

My quick research concluded that there have been a few major studies about color and the impact on students.  Light yellow-orange, light green, beige, and blue-green have shown to increase positive attitudes and productiveness.  Adding to the affects of color in the classroom, lighting is also a positive benefit.  As a Northerner, I can definitely say sunny days can make a huge difference on my mood.  Natural lighting should be part of the classroom if possible or you can use full-spectrum bulbs.

I definitely think that the environment will help shape students perceptions.  I can agree that color can be an agitator or an aid.  However, I truly feel that the environment will be constructed by the teacher and students.  I feel that color will not have such a great impact that is will ensure success.

I agree completely with this. A classroom really has to have a feeling of warmth and organization. A classroom needs to be a place for learning and studying and whatever else. It needs to feel almost like home, but with the idea of working too. It cannot be a disorganized place, otherwise no one really knows what to do.

Glad you wrote about this, it’s pretty inspirational! :)

Just looking at the title of your blog made me think of a research project I completed in high school. I did a project in psychology that looked at the different effects that certain colors had on people. I’d have to say it was one of the most interesting projects I have ever done. Not only did I enjoy finding the information, I have retained a lot of the information I learned. (That’s saying a lot since it has been about 5 years since the project, and I don’t remember some of the stuff I “learned” last semester!) Color definitely has more of an impact than people notice – and it is so interesting to learn about!

The environment our students learn in should be tailored to be conducive to learning. Students shouldn’t be distracted by too much stuff, but it also can’t be too sterile and reminiscent of a hospital. It really is critical that we find the right blend of everything to make our classroom as welcoming as possible.

Florescent lights are so dark in my opinion. I much prefer a softer, more natural light. And my school *attempted* to do the color thing. One wall of each classroom (usually the one the desks were facing) was painted a color. However, the colors weren’t very calming and relaxing, they were very vibrant, bright, and “exciting”. I’m talking neon orange and lime greens. While they are fun, I don’t know if they would fall into what the article you read had mentioned.

I personally hope I can paint my room in the future :D
