25 Random Thoughts

My 25 Really Random Thoughts
1. There are many hoops and loop holes in the education system & I don’t like it
2. Education never ends
3. Technology is only a tool, school should be taught by a teacher!
4. Interaction and Inclusion is a must
5. I like organization
6. Connections and communication go far!
7. Try new things in the classroom, boring is yesterday.
8. Get to know students beyond their performance in your classroom
9. Inspire, Inspire, Inspire!!
10. Be Proactive not Reactive
11. Involve Parents – they can be you’re greatest resource and supporter.
12. I want to take mini field trips in my classroom to incorporate learning and take it beyond the classroom.
13. Tests are scary for myself, I can only imagine how students feel. I want to keep tests at a minimum and assess students learning through different methods.
14. Students are people too!
15. I love learning about Geography and History and want to connect the subjects w/students on a level with which every student can relate and appreciate and hopefully love.
16. I desire to stay strong and assertive, as this is one of my weaknesses.
17. I want to make the classroom my own and have a homey environment that my students feel comfortable, engaged, and calm.
18. Hmmm….Thoughts….Thinking….Teachers could be a students best role model.
19. The sky should be the limit in the classroom.
20. Teachers will never be “out of style”, there will always be a demand.
21. Teachers are soooo underpaid for what they do it’s ridiculous.
22. Interesting how college prof’s only need so many masters to teach, feels like something is wrong w/that picture.
23. The thoughts of getting in front of students and teaching scares me to death, but still I’m driven…hmmm.
24. I think teaching can really pull at your heart, it must be hard sometimes to find the right balance at times.
25. Technology is changing constantly, staying caught up all the time seems somewhat impossible, but the effort is there.

Feb. 10th
February 10, 2009 by kgrabeman
I am not currently placed within a classroom due to the classes that I am enrolled in currently. I do plan to submit my application for subing in the near future to further my involvement and get my “feet wet” so to speak. I feel it is time to “dive in” and face my fears, and get a taste of what managing a classroom on my own will be like. Also, I feel it is a great way to experiment with behaviors and what to do vs what not to do.
The last time I was physically in the classroom was last semester over at Bothwell Middle School. I observed sixth and eighth grade classrooms. There was a night and day difference between the two. Both classrooms I feel did not use much technology. There was a lot of hands on applications. One in awhile the eighth grade classroom would watch a video over early American history, specifically battles and ways of life. The sixth grade classroom might have had a seperate computer lab because I did not see any computers that the students could use themselves. The teacher did incorporate technology into her classroom in subtle ways, by managing attendance, printing off worksheets, and sending emails back and forth. I feel that technology now looking at it through the our technology class was definetly lacking. I must say that classroom structure was not much different as to when I went to school.
I observed each class for one period one day each week, so I feel that there is a great possibility of missing crutical evidence that technology was incorporated into the students curriculum. With this class I am beginning to see easy ways to incorporate technology into the classroom into a weekly schedule. I would want to use technology that is simple and quick to setup and fast and efficent to use. I feel that there is a vast array of uses that I have yet to discover.

Feb. 2nd: Generation Y
February 2, 2009 by kgrabeman
I feel there is a huge difference between the baby boomers of yesteryear and Generation Y of today. I do feel the younger generation of today is much more connected to technology, however I’m not saying that all baby boomers aren’t. On the negatige side Generation Y I think has been bombarded with advertising, constant change, and disconnectedness with some one on one interactions. However, Generation Y has advantages in living in today’s society and becoming acclimated to an ever-changing society and “shrinking world”. Thus making themselves more marketable. I think Generation Y, with its expanding knowledge will likely set new expectations for the future.
Here once again, it is our responsibility as teachers to stay informed and one step ahead of “Generation Y” to help them expand and increase their knowledge, we should be teaching not taught (yes, I do feel that we can learn a lot from our students, however it is our job to expand their minds academically & hopefully beyond). To successfully teach, a teacher must be self-motivated to go out of his or her way to continue their own education. Here I believe is one of the essential traits of a successful teacher.

I found the readings to be pretty good. I would really like to see Bloom’s Taxonomy for the Digital World explained more and given some great visual examples to help with my own understanding.
